Prof. Ana-Maria Simundic is a Specialist in Clinical Chemistry and Laboratory Medicine and has received her graduate and postgraduate education at the Faculty of Pharmacy and Medical Biochemistry at Zagreb University where she currently holds a professor position at the department of Medical Biochemistry. During her long career at the University of Zagreb, she has mentored a number of master and PhD students and residents. Students and teaching have always been her passion.
During her professional career, Prof. Simundic has served on several executive roles at some major national and international professional organizations, such as the European Federation of Clinical Chemistry and Laboratory Medicine (EFLM) where she served as the Executive Board Secretary (2011-2017), President-Elect (2018-2019), President (2020-2021) and Past President (2022-2023). She has been chairing the EFLM Working group for Preanalytical Phase (WG-PRE) since 2012-2018. Currently she acts as the Expert-Consultant in this group. Prof. Simundic was a member of the IFCC Executive Board during 2020-2023 and is now active member of IFCC TF-CM and IFCC TF-Ethics.
She was the President of the Croatian Society of Medical Biochemistry and Laboratory Medicine 2012-2018. She has been Editor-in-chief of the journal Biochemia Medica, published by Croatian society of Medical Biochemistry and Laboratory Medicine, until the end of 2017. During her mandate Biochemia Medica has gained international recognition and has been accepted for indexing in all major bibliographic databases. Moreover, during the mandate of Prof. Simundic, Biochemia Medica was, for a several subsequent years, the journal with the highest Impact factor in Croatia and was among the top journal at the international level in the category of Medical Laboratory Technology journals.
Prof. Simundic has authored or co-authored numerous peer reviewed manuscripts. Her area of professional and research activities is quality management and preanalytical phase. For several years now, since 2019 and still today, she is among the 2% scientists in the world, ranked by the number of citations to her work, according to the Stanford University citation data analysis.
As an invited speaker, she has given numerous lectures at national and international scientific meetings, congresses and symposia. As a chair or a member of the organizing and/or scientific committee, she has been actively engaged in numerous national and international meetings. She has authored and co-authored over 200 publications and 28 books/book chapters.
For her work, she was awarded with numerous awards during her career. The last award she received recently is the EFLM Award for Scientific Achievements in Laboratory Medicine, which was awarded to her at the occasion of Euromedlab congress in Brussels in May 2025.
